Creating Change at UR

At the University of Richmond, we believe that our students have the capacity and responsibility to create change and to create a campus community that is safe and free of sexual misconduct. That begins with prevention efforts.

Prevention efforts include raising awareness about sexual and relationship violence, building the skills and confidence needed to intervene in problematic situations, embracing a healthy sexuality, and changing the social norms that perpetuate sexual misconduct. We do this through activities, events, workshops, trainings, and more.

Check out some our past and ongoing prevention initiatives on our website, calendar, and instagram and stay up-to-date with ways that YOU can be the change here at UR.

Student Initiatives

Across our campus, there are several student initiatives dedicated to ending sexual violence at the University of Richmond and in the greater community.

  • Peer Sexual Misconduct Advisors

Peer Sexual Misconduct Advisors (PSMA) are UR students who serve as confidential peer advocates trained in Title IX policy, procedure, and emotional support resources. PSMAs are students who are selected through an application process and complete extensive training from the Title IX Coordinator, URPD, CAPS, St. Mary’s Hospital, Safe Harbor, SCEI, and the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney. All contact is confidential because the PSMAs are not employees of the University.

We do recruitment in early spring semester. If you are interested in joining, email psma@richmond.edu so we can send you the application when it goes live!

  • URWell Peer Educators

UR Well Peer Educators serve an important role at University of Richmond to engage their fellow Spiders in promoting healthy behaviors through outreach and educational programs. UR Well Peer Educators are trained in facilitation skills, active listening, and health promotion content areas such as: violence prevention (bystander intervention, consent, healthy relationships, etc), sexual health, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD), mental health, cultural sensitivity, and more.

You can learn more about this program by contacting urwellpeereducators@gmail.com, or sign up through the Peer Educator Interest Form.

  • Spiders Against Sexual Assault and Violence

Spiders Against Sexual Assault and Violence (SASAV) is a student organization founded in 2016 dedicated to creating a community that better supports survivors and to building a culture of consent. They strive to affect change through educational and awareness-building events, and to critique and change power structures through radical consent education and self evaluation. Consent is an action one performs everyday in a non-consensual world. Through SASAV’s programming, one may better understand their position in society and how to improve it given the imbalances that exist in society.
